First European Child Participation Fair
2026Two days of learning, exchange, and inspiration on inclusive child participation
The First European Fair on Child Participation, held on 17 and 18 November 2025 in Brussels, marked a significant milestone in advancing meaningful and inclusive child participation across Europe. Organized by Save the Children Europe and SOS Children’s Villages International within the framework of the Inclusive Child Participation Networks project, the Fair brought together 68 participants, including 13 children, creating a unique platform for dialogue, learning, and collaboration.
At the heart of the event were children themselves. They were not only present but actively shaped the programme, contributing to panels, facilitating sessions, and sharing their lived experiences directly with practitioners, policymakers, and other stakeholders. Dedicated daily reflection spaces ensured that children could influence the flow and outcomes of the Fair in a safe and supportive environment, reinforcing the commitment to meaningful participation.
Across two days, participants explored why child participation is essential to decision making, showcasing a wide range of methodologies and initiatives from across Europe. Sessions highlighted practical approaches to involving children of all ages, including younger children, those in vulnerable situations, and those often excluded from decision making processes. Examples included child led research initiatives, participatory camps, youth advisory structures, and innovative models such as hackathon style participation methods.
A key message emerging from the Fair was that meaningful participation requires more than one off engagement. It depends on long term commitment, trust, inclusive design, and structures that allow children’s views to genuinely influence policies and decisions. Children themselves emphasized that participation must be safe, inclusive, and built on mutual respect, with adults actively listening and taking their contributions seriously.
The Fair also provided space for networking and exchange through an interactive exhibition and informal discussions, enabling participants to share tools, resources, and experiences across countries. The event concluded with the launch of the European Child Participation Network, which aims to further strengthen collaboration, build capacity, and expand opportunities for child participation at both national and European levels.
Looking ahead, the initiative will continue to grow, with plans for new activities, the development of a European Competence Centre, and a second European event in 2026. The Fair represents not an endpoint, but the beginning of a strengthened collective effort to ensure that children across Europe are heard, respected, and actively involved in shaping the decisions that affect their lives.
